Obituary

Phibbs, John Paul (Phibber)

Peacefully at Stedman Community Hospice, Brantford after a lengthy battle with cancer, on Thursday, February 20, 2020. Paul is survived by his supportive, compassionate friend Penny. Beloved father of Kevin (Molly) Phibbs, Brittnee (James) Carruthers and Kyle (Emily) Phibbs. Proud Grandpa of Odette Carruthers. Brother of Ted (Gail) Phibbs and Bettee-Ann (Claude) Labrie. Paul is also survived by Barb Stoffelsen, Karen (Cam), Steve (Lynette) and Julie (Clarence) and will be sadly missed by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Predeceased by his parents, Jack and Helen (Wilson) Phibbs, his sister Joanne and his first wife Denise Vaillancourt. Paul was a lifelong resident of Garnet, born and raised on the family farm and his heart remained there until the end. Paul was an avid sports fan and participant. His joy of playing sports was only matched and exceeded when he was able to watch, support and coach his own children in the sports he loved. There will be a celebration of Paul’s life held at Kingsway Church, 3776 Highway #3, Balmoral on Tuesday from 5-8 pm with a short time of reflection at 6:30. Cremation has taken place and a private family committal service will be held at Garnet United Church Cemetery at a later date. If desired donations to Stedman Community Hospice would be appreciated by the family. Arrangements entrusted to COOPER FUNERAL HOME, (519-587-4414). Friends are invited to send condolences and sign the Book of Memories at www.cooperfuneralhome.ca

My sincere condolences to Paul’s family. As I recall, Paul was always into sports and devoted to his family. He will be missed.

I did not know Paul well, but I had the pleasure of going on a golf trip with him and my brother Claude many years ago. He was a jokester, but we did have a good laugh on him during that trip. Paul was “very mad” on loosing his wallet or so he thought. I can’t repeat his rant. We drove around tracing our steps looking for that wallet. All he could think of was his trip money gone. On one of our many stops in our search, we pulled into a gas station we had filled up at earlier and out he jumps rushing in the store to ask the clerk if anyone had turned in his wallet. It was night time. He left the passenger door open in his hurriedness and there hanging from the door storage cubby, dangling like it was meant to be there, was his wallet. Claude and I laughed and waited. As Paul came back you could see the smoke coming from his ears, man was he mad. We prodded him to look where his wallet was and how quickly his frustration left. What a relieved look on his face. Of course we took great pleasure teasing him about it countless times after. It was fun, he was fun.

Thank you Chuck it was great to see you last night! Thanks for the memories! When I was reading your story I knew exactly how he would have been, he could get so fired up and then come down so quickly! He was quite the guy and we will miss him greatly!
